Welcome!

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… two people went on a trip and decided they wanted to live on a sailboat.

Doug and I first met when I was in 8th grade and he was a sophomore. It was my sister’s graduation party and he tore down the decorations that I had lovingly put up on the porch. I instantly hated him. Ten months later, we went on our first date. Three years later, with a ton of great memories and a few bad decisions, we got married 6 days after my high school graduation.

The first 15 years of our marriage were spent with Doug going to college, raising our son and daughter, moving a handful of times (to MIssouri, Illinois, back to Iowa, and then to Nebraska), me taking college classes off and on, a few job changes, and finally buying a house in Gretna, Nebraska where we imagined living for quite awhile. Doug taught at the high school, both kids were happy at their schools, and Cindy made friends with the other moms. Then Christmas 2012 came and the extended Bertelsen family went on a cruise in the Caribbean. We loved it and couldn’t wait to go back. Doug and I immediately booked another cruise for our 15 year wedding anniversary in May 2013. I booked us a day sail on a catamaran while we were at port in Barbados. That is all it took… just a fraction of a day on a sailboat. We decided we wanted to live on one and sail around the world. And we have never waivered.

We have planned and plotted and debated and researched and discussed and pondered and so many more things for years and years now. It has been a lot of small decisions, a couple largish decisions and semi-patiently waiting. In the next few weeks, that will all change as we are finally at the point where we can start boat shopping and making those HUGE decisions that will actually get us on a boat.

We want to invite you all on this journey with us. To share in all the joys and triumphs and also the failures and setbacks. Our goal is to inspire others to dream big dreams and make them a reality. We want to share it with all of you, our friends and family. We will soon be getting social media sites set up so you can know when we have an update to share. Until then, keep an eye on our personal Facebook pages. Send us your questions to cindy@svdelfin.com to help me get started on my journal entries.

Doug and I can’t wait to get this adventure started! Thank you for supporting us and encouraging us along the way!
